Osteopath

Osteopathy is a holistic form of health care aiming to keep the body in optimal health by considering all issues in the patient’s life. Osteopaths undergo extensive training and depending on the country and the Osteopathic association in that country, the requirements for registration are slightly different. We as Osteopaths aim to keep the body’s anatomy in efficient balance in order to prevent disease by minimizing illnesses associated with the body’s misalignment. An Osteopath’s holistic approach in treating patients is an excellent way of identifying the source and applying treatment.

During your initial visit you can expect to be greeted by our Osteopath and an assessment will be undertaken in order to eliminate any potential causes of illness. Osteopaths believe pain is a lead contributor to illness. This pain may stem from the musculoskeletal system and this is what we aim to treat. By getting the body into its set form the body will assist the mind to reach optimal function. A healthier mind will result in a healthier overall system.

Osteopaths often employ massage therapist to assist with preparing muscles and joints for adjustments. For some patients the process is not the most comfortable and for others, they get immense relief. Millions of patients each year get relief from similar forms of treatment to Osteopathic techniques. Manipulation is also incorporated into other forms of health care such as, Chiropractic therapy, Manual therapy, and in some cases Physical Therapy.

The pain that is treated during Osteopathy is associated with misalignments of joints. There are many theories to why the pain appears; some believe he pain can be caused by a suction created by an unnatural pressure difference around the joints or it could also be from the extra stress added to the ligaments supporting the structures. Ligaments are responsible, with muscles and other connective tissue in holding joints together. Although, the muscle provides great strength to protect the ligament, but if the joint is constantly misaligned there will be a constant, and unnecessary, stress placed on the ligaments. This will cause a safety reflex mechanism from the body and cause surrounding structures to be inflamed to prevent extensive movement – the muscle may contract and go into spasm. There is also a constant focus on this from the mind, whether it be a subconscious focus or not, there is energy exerted to the misaligned area in an attempt to rectify the issue. Osteopaths attempt to prevent those issues from happening and many more associated with the problem. In many instances we work with other health care professions as we take the patient’s entire life into account while treating their heath. Often a massage therapist will assist with some of the surrounding structures to the joints before they are manipulated. This may involve a massage session before the manipulation to increase blood flow to the surrounding areas and cause a slight increase in temperature to the structures. The increase in temperatures will also make the experience more enjoyable for those who are new to Osteopathy.

Once the benefits of Osteopathy have been introduced to your life you will find our profession to be an integral contributor to your health and it will contribute to a healthier mind, improved energy and overall better outcome for your daily routine.
